What We Have Here Is A Broken B-tree
After much discussion, via forums of various sites, we have decided to invest in DiskWarrior to repair our B-tree, but we will be waiting on my pay day. In the meantime, the iMac will continue to need two start-ups each time to get it running from the LaCie disk which actually still works. so far.

So, did you decide if the B-tree corruption was a result of the OS patch as you had mentioned?

My bet is on a bad sector on the disk at a key part of the tree. Most things like that are usually rebuildable, I think. Could be from an OS change or just random fluctuations of the universe, who knows….

As far as my research is concerned, the B-tree problem is not a result of the recent OS patch. Apparently, for me it is just a coincidence. Diskwarrior was built with this exact problem in mind. Their website says (I won’t question the accuracy) that Directory problems are the number one Hard Drive problems in Mac OS, and that this program was built to combat/repair those problems. I agree with Jer and my Dad that there is probably a bad Sector on the disk where the B-tree is located. My current setup will not fix this problem, but DW claims to be able to fix that problem. Anywhoo, I’ma ramblin’, so I’ll shut up.

I too have a dying Mac. I can’t even get the hard drive to appear on the desktop half the time… and it’s a relatively newish G4. I will be doing something when I get the never-ending spinning ball and it’s frozen once again. When I ran Disk Utilities it said I have a hard drive with “unexpected errors” so that’s no help. There were originally B-Tree errors also. Plus some others where the D. Utility just threw up its hands and said, “who knows?” Now after reformatting and reinstalling the 10.2 software it thinks I have two hard drives, when it even bothers to mount the one I have.
Could you let me know via email (which I’m getting on my husband’s laptop) if the Disk Warrior software works? At this point it’s either try Disk Warrior or call the Guys Who Want A Lot of Money From Me. I don’t want to call them!
Thanks,
Shelly in MN

We’re in the Apple store right now, about to buy DiskWarrior. I’ll let everyone know how things turn out.
