I made a header image out of the pic of Dave playin’ his trombone, so don’t think it’s strange or anything if you see him up there. Also, I don’t know why, but Safari is really screwing up the picture sizes, even though the instructions are correct… they should only be 500 px wide but for some reason, Safari is making them wider… but not taller… ??  Any ideas?  Jer?

Yeah!

Last night, we all loaded up the car and drove to San Marcos where the church band played some rockin’ 70’s tunes for a street festival. The weather was hot, the music was hot, and we all had fun. James and I mostly hung out with Rachel and Jenna, Ella, and Brayden. It was a blast!

Hungry Howie’s Pizza

Monday, July 24th, 2006

So, the pediatrician said that James could eat any of the food that we eat. We have been giving him samples of our food for months now, but tonight, James got his first slice of pizza…Hungry Howie’s Pizza to be precise (this is the first time that I’ve tried Hungry Howie’s, and I give the pizza chain my full endorsement). James’ first pizza was a Thin-Butter-Crust pizza topped with ham (Hungry Howie’s specializes in flavored crusts, and the butter crust sounded the least adventurous for a first timer). James did great…

Here’s what he learned:

1. How to hold a slice of pizza
2. The bite-and-pull technique (this enables James to eat only a small portion of his slice, instead of the whole thing)
3. The cheese is not permanently attached to the crust
4. Thin crust pizza gets crispier toward the edge of the pizza

Well, I’m a proud papa, that’s for sure. Next up for James: Fire in the Hole Wings…maybe…

One Year Old…

birth…
7 pounds, 8 ounces
21 inches long

one year…
22 pounds, 10 ounces
31 inches tall

He has a pretty big head, though, for his age… must be all the hair, you know, padding the measurements a bit here and there.

Everything checks out great. He got two shots (Chickenpox, MMR, and Hepatitis A - they combined two of them, I forget which ones) and we’ll be watching over the next three weeks for the possible symptoms to show up. They wanted to know if he knew two words. Well, I’m glad to say that he knows at least six, though he knows the baby signs of at least a dozen or so. He’s also been walking for over three months, so we’re okay on that part, too. Right now, David is working on “sit” and “stand” with James. Grandma and Grandpa K got James his own chair and he looks so big in it.

I cannot believe how fast this year has gone. He is getting so big!

The extent of the hoopla…

This is what we did for James’ birthday. We were a day late because we got a call concerning my health insurance policy. You see, I did not realize that as a self employed individual policy holder, I do not qualify for maternity benefits. We, of course, panicked and are now looking into the alternatives, literally. We have a one o’ clock appointment tomorrow at the Austin Area Birthing Center to check them out and see what they’re all about.

So, we now have a one year old. How cool is that?!

*Yes, I do realize this means a natural childbirth. I’m fine with that. I wanted to have James there anyhow, but the horror stories scared me right into the hospital. This time around, I am not as afraid.

James is ONE

No hoopla.  In fact, we didn’t even do a cupcake like we had planned.  We’ll let him get messy tomorrow.

I had a big bombshell land in my face (so-to-speak) that took all my attention away from James for the majority of the day.  Everything is okay.  We are all alright, but a lot of our time and energy will be consumed with dealing with the news we received today.

We did end up taking James to the new water park in Round Rock, then to a late dinner at Taco Bell (hence the no cupcake) with his first cinnamon puffs to celebrate.  Home for bath and bedtime and here we are.  The boy is officially one!

We have a tadpole!

7 weeks 1 day, uploaded by davejenbarnes

Not really. It’s a baby! We have a more accurate due date after the ultrasound. March 4, 2007!

Visit our photos page for a link to all three ultrasound pictures.

summerfest montage, uploaded by davejenbarnes

Head on over to the summerfest photos page for a peek at all of the pics!

James is growing so quickly.  We could swear that he is an inch taller every time he wakes up from a nap that was longer than 2 hours.  His latest stunts are trying to climb.  Oh boy.  I don’t think we are ready for a climber!

Big Brother

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

In case you haven’t heard already, James will be a big brother next February. While we are very excited about this news, we are also a little bit scared and a little bit surprised. We know that God will provide all we need so we are not worried about how we will handle bringing another goober (if this little one turns out anything like his/her big brother) into this world.

We have told James, but you can’t expect an almost-one-year-old to understand a concept like brotherhood. I mean, he’s just now got the hang of when to say “wow!” or “uh-oh!” or “woo-woo!” (woo-woo is his sound for a train) … Right now, his big thing is fish. We taught him a baby sign for fish and he will use it anytime he thinks about fish or sees fish. The boy loves fish. He can already point out the baby when you ask him where the baby is on the diaper packaging. I guess we’ll build from that and eventually end up with pointing to my belly as I get bigger and bigger.

Oh, and we will be finding out what this one is… just for the sake of being able to buy some of the world’s cutest diapers in the appropriate fabrics. Have I mentioned that I just love cloth diapering?
