2nd prenatal visit

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

I had my first appointment with the midwives at the birthing center today. Let. Me. Tell. You. This is gonna rock. I mean, I feel so informed and empowered. I have a heart murmur (which I knew about but my obgyn never mentioned) and an enlarged thyroid (which the midwife said was due to the pregnancy but she would keep an eye on it) and she was concerned about my weight being low (113). My medical records said my EDD was February 28, the spinny chart thingy said Feb 25. She said since they were 3 days apart, they’d go with the earlier EDD so I magically jumped up to almost 15 weeks along (having just been 12 weeks along last week) and my uterus is measuring at 10 cm from pelvic bone to the top of it… hb at 157 bpm. So, yeah, lots of information and I have a nutrition chart to stick to and a food diary to start. She wants to make sure I’m getting a balanced diet - not just popsicles and water - and that I gain weight. She recommended I drink Ensure regularly. Hmm… I’ve heard that before! So I do my own pee-on-a-stick tests and my own weight checks when I get there. They’re also going to teach me to take my own blood pressure. I’m already feeling so much more involved with this pregnancy than I felt with James’.

One Nap Days

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

This past weekend, James suddenly began refusing his afternoon nap. I had heard that it typically happens that the morning nap is the one that disappears, but not in this case. We’re now averaging the morning time with the afternoon time and attempting to take a nap around 1:30. Today is rough because we’re at Grandma’s house and I couldn’t fit his room into the car to bring up here for him. He’s reeeeeeealy tired, though, so I am sure Grandma is reaching some level of success with the rocking by now. (it’s 1:45 - ooop, the phone just rang, I bet he’s awake now)

One Nap Days are hard because I’m so used to two hour long naps and now only get one 45-90 min nap. And you never can predict whether that 45 min. cry is an awake-for-good one or if it is only a rolling-over-getting-comfortable one. I was hoping to have one of those kids that is out for 3 hours. No such luck.

12 weeks along, the second time around

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

Pretty much ditto the last time, but minus the doctor’s appointment. Dave and I are still needing to set up a loan before I make my appointment with the midwives at AABC. On the one hand I can’t believe I’m twelve weeks along, and yet, on the other hand we still have so very long to go. Food still pretty much grosses me out, though the idea of it no longer does. My diet pretty much consists of popsicles, frozen grapes, Cap’n Crunch Peanut Butter cereal, pop tarts (gotta have the frosting), and fruit roll-ups. And have I gained any weight? doubtful. Pregnancy rocks, I tell ya!

In other news, somewhat distantly related to the pregnancy, James is weaned. It’s a heartbreaker but now he just gets excited for a different kind of milk. At least it can put him to sleep, too. ;-) It’s been wierd not doing the nighttime thing for two nights in a row now. I know this is the best for the baby and for my body right now… if I weren’t so underweight it probably wouldn’t be an issue and I could continue to nurse James throughout the pregnancy without worrying but as it is, this way I’m not having to nourish three people with my crappy diet.

will it ever rain?

will it ever rain?, uploaded by davejenbarnes

We’ve been weeks, nay, months without a good rain here. Now that we have a yard, we really appreciate rainy weather. We’ve been filling up a little inflatable pool in the back yard, alternating which sides of the patio we put it, and giving James a few “swimming” nights each week. Draining the pool into the yard has, at least, kept two little patches of grass alive. The sprinkler we have is pretty crappy and doesn’t oscillate like it is designed to do. At least that way, it makes for some good clean fun for James! He loved it. And the best part is that my bro was here to get the pics.

Sign into flickr, then go view our pics from the sprinkler fun! (sorry, this is for our flickr friends and family only)

UPDATE: In the first, oh, 11 hours or so of this picture being uploaded to flickr, we’re amazed that it has 279 views already! Great shot, Jer!

One Year Portraits… well… more like 13 month portraits…

Hey, at least we got them done. So what if they aren’t the end-all and be-all of portraits. My bro will be coming down soon and we will get some much better pics of da boy! Click the thumbnail for a link to the Sears viewing page to see all of them.
